Rafael's first inspiration was his father, who was an artist for the Duke of Urbino. After his father died, he took over his workshop and became very well-known and successful. Later, he became an apprentice of the the Umbrian master Perugino and was a master himself by 1501. His first documented work was the Baronci alterpiece for the church of Saint Nicholas, located in Citta di Castello.
